Blackened Silver! What is it?
Sitting there in the jewellery display cabinet are sterling silver pieces, brilliant gems, lots of shine, and a few black pieces. These dark hues are the result of a popular technique in jewellery making called Oxidisation.
What is Oxidisation?
It is a surface treatment used by jewellery designers to speed up the tarnishing process of silver creating a blackened patina. It is achieved by exposing the piece to sulphur in a chemical solution. The depth of blackening can be varied from light grey to a solid black depending on the desired effect the jeweller want to achieve.
Your oxidised silver ring or earrings will have a great character that will develop with wear. To retain the oxidised effect for as long as possible don't clean your jewellery with silver cleaning cloths or silver dip.
